To change our world's energy culture, to raise global awareness in order to develop and adopt practical programs to implement clean, efficient, and renewable energy and to create a global response to our increasingly urgent climate crisis.

Energy and Climate

For millennia, indigenous people lived in harmony with the Earth and treated every living thing with reverence and respect. Now this natural equilibrium is out of balance. Industrial development, economic expansion, and modern technology have revolutionized life on Earth. But they have also undermined ecological stability, causing climate change and environmental distress. Energy—our growing demand, our methods of generation, and our choice of fuels—is the primary cause.

Hawaii as Clean Energy Model

Hawaii's unique blend of attributes makes it an ideal place to become a clean energy model for the world. As the most remote island chain on earth, its need for locally produced clean energy is particularly acute. This isolation also makes it an ideal place to measure the impact of introducing alternative energy sources, as Hawaii is not connected to a mainland grid. Indeed, even the individual island grids are not interconnected. Hawaii has almost every natural resource needed for energy development, a wide variety of energy projects is already underway and plans to reduce its dependence on fossil fuel are being considered. Add to that a millennia-long cultural heritage of sustainable resource management and an image as paradise in the eyes of the world and one can readily see that Hawaii is perfectly situated to become a clean energy paradigm for the planet. The Blue Planet Foundation will encourage Summit participants to envision how to maximize the potential of this unique combination of factors to make Hawaii an energy model, and how to translate those results to benefit other locations around the globe.

Education

The Blue Planet Foundation will also engage educators and their students by providing a range of educational materials and media formats. We will also produce web content and DVDs for academic, legislative and civic use.
